IMO there were two main things: Capaldi followed immediately on from Matt Smith, the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor (just pipping Davison) and is just shy of the oldest actor to play the Doctor. And Eleven is played as a fairly childlike Doctor too. From there to Twelve was quite a jump for some people.
