Lloyd Nolan. Lloyd Benedict Nolan was an American film and television actor. Nolan was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Margaret and James Nolan, who was a shoe manufacturer. He began his career on stage and was subsequently lured to Hollywood, where he played mainly doctors, detectives, and police officers in many movie roles.

Lloyd Nolan was most famous for his role as the curmudgeonly Doctor Morton Chegley in the Diahann Carroll situation comedy Julia (1968–71). Nolan spent much of his career acting in “B” movies, usually playing police detectives or gangsters in such films as King of Gamblers (1937), Michael Shayne, Private Detective (1940), and Buy Me That Town (1941).
