Apr 28, 2020 · Anyone remember this movie? It was released 30 years ago as of yesterday. It is one of the weirdest movies in William Friedkin's filmography, and perhaps his biggest misfire. It has Jenny Seagrove playing a nanny/dryad who comes out of the woods to steal babies from upperclass LA families and sacrifice them to the tree she is bound to.

The film was intended to depict gay cruising as it existed at the Mineshaft, but that bar is not named in the movie because the Mineshaft would not allow filming.
Feb 1, 2020 · It succeeded in the sense of having a commercial pedigree---Friedkin was a straight, up and coming director, the studio was a shortlived CBS spinoff that made a number of major films, the distributor was second string but not just an art house operation). The film mostly played urban art house theaters, but even that was a novelty.
Jun 11, 2020 · Julia Stiles--a fine actress who was the standout in "Mona Lisa Smiles" (starring the awesomely limited Julia Roberts, but also with such excellent actors as Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, and Ginnifer Goodwin in the cast) , but she didn't seem to have the fire in the belly to make it to the big leagues.

Jul 26, 2021 · I went to a screening where William Friedkin spoke and took questions from the audience. One young woman asked if the part where tubular bells starts to play and the nun's habits are blown by the wind is meant to symbolize when evil enters the film. I always thought this was true and thought the nun's thing was so brilliant.
