Jan 11, 2024 · Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the Red Deer River valley in southeastern Alberta. Full of iconic badlands scenery and just a two-hour drive east of Calgary, the site is best known for its renowned fossil assemblage and contains the richest collection of dinosaur fossils in the world.
In addition to its particularly beautiful scenery, Dinosaur Provincial Park – located at the heart of the province of Alberta's badlands – contains some of the most important fossil discoveries ever made from the 'Age of Reptiles', in particular about 35 species of dinosaur, dating back some 75 million years.
For its size, the park has the greatest variety of dinosaurs ever found, its core rationale as a World Heritage Site. That the treasure trove was ever found we owe to the torrential glacial melt at the end of the Ice Age, exposing fossils some 70 million years old.
Countless creatures flourished there - fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, primitive mammals and about 35 species of dinosaur. When some of these animals died, they lay in river channels and mud flats so their bones were buried in new layers of sand and mud.
