Adolf Dresen studied Germanistik in Leipzig (1953-1959) where he was also an amateur actor. From 1959 to 1962 he worked as a theatre director in Magdeburg. He moved to Greifswald, where he was fired after a much disputed Hamlet performance.

Seghers was a mentor for Wolf, as was Brecht for Müller.
