- 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone' (1972) You're nearly four minutes into the practically 12-minute version of "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" as it appeared on "All Directions" by the time the singing starts, allowing Whitfield ample time to set the mood, which is tense and dramatic, with his orchestrated soundtrack.

This may be the best song Smokey ever gave away, a hopelessly devoted celebration of his special girl (the Miracles' own Claudette Rodgers), written in collaboration with another Miracle, Ronnie White.
