David May (1848–1927) was an American businessman and founder of the May Company department store.
In 1877, David May helped found the Hebrew Benevolent Association in Leadville. May and his family were founding members of Temple Israel, Leadville’s first congregation. May served as vice president of the Temple and was a member of the building committee. He also supported the local Orthodox synagogue, Kneseth Israel.
Mar 30, 2012 · David May became a vice president of the St. Louis Commercial Investment Trust, a director of the St. Louis Federation of Jewish Charities, and also remained a vice president of the Denver National Jewish Hospital for Consumptives. He often engaged in more personal acts of charity as well.

The May Department Stores Company was an American department store holding company, formerly headquartered in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It was founded in Leadville, Colorado, by David May in 1877, moving to St. Louis in 1905.
David May was born in Bavaria and came to Colorado for his health. May opened his first clothing store in Leadville in 1887, where he and his partners sold Levis and long, red, woolen underwear. The second store was in Irwin, Colorado and the store later opened in Denver.
