Walmsley is taking time to rest and reflect on a successful year of firsts that saw him not only become the first American male to win UTMB in its 20-year history, but also set the course record.
Jim Walmsley (born January 17, 1990) is an American long-distance runner. An ultra-trail specialist, his wins include the JFK 50 Mile in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Lake Sonoma 50 in 2016 and 2018, the Tarawera Ultramarathon in 2017, and the Western States 100 in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2024.

Sep 2, 2022 · Jim Walmsley left Chamonix on Sunday, but he’ll be back to honor his dream of winning UTMB. The top-tier American trail runner went for broke in the 171km Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc race last weekend, but he wasn’t able to hold the lead he built and had to settle for fourth place.
- He’s Been Living in a Small Ski Resort Town in France for 16 Months. Jim and Jess have been renting a house adjacent to a small ski resort in the town of Arêches, which is located in the Beaufortain Valley southwest of the western portion of the UTMB race course loop.
- He’s Recovered from an Ankle Injury He Suffered in the Spring. In early May, about two weeks after winning the Istria 100 by UTMB in Croatia, Walmsley was on an easy recovery run on a dirt road near Annecy, France, when he rolled his right ankle and suffered a bad sprain that resulted in two partially torn ligaments and one fully torn ligament.
- Getting Immigration Paperwork Wasn’t Easy. The Walmsleys knew in early 2022 they intended to move to France so Jim could focus on training for UTMB. They started the paperwork process in April of that year, filling out a packet of forms and then visiting the French embassy in Los Angeles to take fingerprints and photos.
- He’s Trained with Locals, and He’s Trained Alone. Not only after winning last October’s Festival Des Templiers, a 51-mile race with 12,000 feet of vertical gain, Walmsley took several months off from running and exclusively trained on alpine touring skis and indoors on his Wahoo bike trainer.

The 32-year-old American has enjoyed a glittering ultra running career so far, including three victories in the Western States 100.
