Martin Charles Scorsese (/ s k ɔːr ˈ s ɛ s i / skor-SESS-ee, Italian: [skorˈseːze,-se]; born November 17, 1942) is an American filmmaker. He emerged as one of the major figures of the New Hollywood era.
Scorsese received his seventh Academy Award nomination for Best Director, as well as a Golden Globe Award, for Hugo (2011), which went on to win five Academy Awards. Scorsese also serves as executive producer on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010) for which he directed the pilot episode.
