A megacity is a very large city, typically with a population of more than 10 million people. [1] [2] [3] [4] The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its 2018 "World Urbanization Prospects" report defines megacities as urban agglomerations with over 10 million inhabitants. [5] .
The Asian continent is the obvious leader of our ranking of worldwide megacities. But Asia also provides the largest urban agglomerations worldwide, which consist of a bundle of politically separated cities, such as Tokyo-Yokohama, New York, Manila or Delhi.

Jun 28, 2018 · A megacity is defined by the United Nations as a city which has a population of 10 million or more people. Currently, there are 37 megacities in the world. These cities include Tokyo, New York, Paris, Berlin, and Bangkok among others.
- Tokyo, Japan – 37.1 million. Tokyo is the world’s largest city – with a population size four times larger than London – but its population dropped by over 79,000 people in the last year.
- Delhi, India – 32.9 million. Growing by over 875,000 people last year, Delhi is the world’s second-largest megacity, but suffers from pressures to improve its infrastructure as a result of its rapidly-growing population.
- Shanghai, China – 29.2 million. Shanghai is China’s largest city and a major financial hub, and its population continues to rise – growing by over 690,000 people in the last year alone.
- Dhaka, Bangladesh – 23.2 million. Situated near the Buriganga River, Dhaka – the capital city of Bangladesh – is a highly-industrialised region, with industries including embroidery, silk and jewellery, as well as a profitable, export-orientated garment industry.
A megacity is an urban area with a population of over ten million people. In 1975, there were only four megacities – New York, Tokyo, Mexico City and São Paolo. Today, there are estimated to be 35.
