Originally called Steps, when it first formed in 1979 by Mike, this group at various times has included saxophonist Michael Brecker, keyboardists Don Grolnick, Eliane Elis and Rachel Z, guitarist Mike Stern, bassists Eddie Gomez and Darryl Jones and drummers Peter Erskine and Steve Smith among others.
The first three albums were released under the name Steps, later changed to Steps Ahead, on Nippon Columbia in Japan, starting with the debut live album Smokin' in the Pit (1980), followed by Step By Step (1981) and Paradox (1982). [3]
