Ivy Close was a Stockton-born star of the silent film era, who won a beauty contest in 1908 and starred in several acclaimed movies. She was also the mother of Gareth Neame, the creator of Downton Abbey, who paid tribute to her in one episode.
Her full name was Ivy Lillian Close. Ivy Close came to the US in 1916 and made a dozen films for the Kalem Company in New York, then returned to England to continue her film career. Her second husband was Curly Batson a make up man.
