Charles Thomas Bolton (April 15, 1943 – c. February 4, 2021) was an American-Canadian astronomer who was one of the first in his field to present strong evidence of the existence of a stellar-mass black hole.
Tom Bolton was a post-doctoral fellow at U of T in 1971 when he observed Cygnus X-1, an X-ray source that turned out to be a black hole. His findings, published in Nature, sparked excitement and controversy in the astronomical community.
