Richard Semler Barthelmess (May 9, 1895 – August 17, 1963) was an American film actor, principally of the Hollywood silent era. He starred opposite Lillian Gish in D. W. Griffith 's Broken Blossoms (1919) and Way Down East (1920) and was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927.
Richard Barthelmess was born into a theatrical family in which his mother was an actress. While attending Trinity College in Connecticut, he began appearing in stage productions. While on vacation in 1916, a friend of his mother, actress Alla Nazimova, offered him a part in War Brides (1916), and Richard never returned to college.

Richard Barthelmess became a leading actor in the Silent era and and was one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, receiving a Best Actor nomination at the very first Awards ceremony. His fortunes took a downward turn when Talkies came in but he finished his career with an acclaimed performance as Rita Hayworth's husband in 'Only Angels Have Wings' in 1939.
