Oct 27, 2016 · Biroc’s shimmering use of light and shadow is what earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Black-and-White Cinematography at the age of 62. It was a nomination long in the making, one of seven the film received overall.
Joseph Biroc was also one of the first cinematographers to regularly work for television. As early as 1950, he photographed five episodes of the TV series Dick Tracy . But it was in 1952 that he met Robert Aldrich on Straight Settlement , an episode of the TV series “China Smith”.
