Takeo, an old prophet, explains a legend to the people of his Japanese village that says that the first male descendent of samurai Lord Yamaki's family is cursed by the gods. Thus, if Yamaki's daughter Toya San marries, the long inactive volcano near their village will erupt.
It's God 1 Buddha 0 as American sailor Frank Borzage persuades Japanese villager Tsuru Aoki that his God outranks hers, which has placed a prophetic curse on her warning that the island volcano on the Japanese fishing village in which she lives will erupt should she ever marry.
