In the late 1940s, swindler Raymond Martinez Fernandez seduces lonely women to steal their money and possessions. When he meets deranged Martha Beck, they fall in love with each other. With jealous Martha pretending to be his sister, crook Ray seduces and kills other women.
A warped and dangerous duo, the lovers leave a bloody trail behind them. As their investigation progresses, Detective Robinson and his partner Charles Hilderbrandt become obsessed by the capture of the 'Lonely Hearts killers', as they are known in the press.
