In rural upstate New York in the 1850s, two women isolated in their marriages form a friendship that slowly blossoms into a deeper connection.
In January 1856 in rural Schoharie County in upstate New York, Abigail (Katherine Waterson) and her husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) live an isolated life in the country working as farmers. They are both devastated by the recent loss of their young daughter Nellie.
