Brother Phelps was an American country music duo formed by brothers Ricky Lee ( guitar, vocals) and Doug Phelps ( bass guitar, vocals). Prior to the duo's formation in 1992, both brothers were members of The Kentucky Headhunters, a Southern rock -influenced country rock band.
The Kentucky Headhunters are an American country rock and Southern rock band originating in the state of Kentucky. The band's members are Doug Phelps (bass guitar, vocals), Greg Martin (lead guitar, vocals), and brothers Richard Young (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Fred Young (drums, vocals).
After the release of the HeadHunters' second album Electric Barnyard, all hell broke loose. On June 2, 1992, Doug and Ricky Phelps left to start a duo career. Longtime friend and cousin Anthony Kenney came to their rescue to play bass, and buddy Mark Orr was recruited for vocals.
It also permeated the Missouri bootheel, where Doug Phelps, who was born in Leachville, Arkansas, grew up. “Susannah” was first inspired from the passing of one of Doug’s long time musical influences and eventual friend, Levon Helm, drummer and vocalist for The Band.
