William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, KG, PC (27 April 1808 – 21 December 1891), styled Lord Cavendish of Keighley between 1831 and 1834 and Earl of Burlington between 1834 and 1858, was a British landowner, benefactor, nobleman, and politician.
William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Burlington of the second creation, became the 7th Duke of Devonshire in 1858. He was grandson of the 6th Duke 's uncle, Lord George Cavendish. An accomplished scholar, he became Chancellor of London University at the age of 28, later Chancellor of Cambridge University and founder of the Cavendish Laboratory there.

William Cavendish (1808-91), 7th Duke of Devonshire, landowner and industrialist, was born on 27 April 1808, in Charles Street, Berkeley Square, London. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and took his BA and MA in 1829, and in June 1829 he was returned as MP for Cambridge University.
The Cavendish family became established in Derbyshire as a result of the marriage of Sir William Cavendish (d. 1557) to Elizabeth Barlow, heiress of Hardwick and later Countess of Shrewsbury.
