John Trumbull (June 6, 1756 – November 10, 1843) was an American painter and military officer best known for his historical paintings of the American Revolutionary War, of which he was a veteran. He has been called the "Painter of the Revolution". [1]
The youngest of six children, John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, to Faith and Jonathan Trumbull Sr. His father was a General Assembly representative, and future Governor (after the War of Independence), of Connecticut, while his mother was a direct descendant of John Robinson, the so-called "Pastor to the Pilgrim-Fathers" (before they set sail on the Mayflower for the New World).

He has been called "The Painter of the Revolution". His Declaration of Independence (1817) was used on the reverse of the commemorative bicentennial two-dollar bill.

John Trumbull is known for his portraits and history paintings of the leaders and events of the American Revolution. Born in 1756 in Lebanon, Connecticut, he graduated from Harvard College in 1773 and served with the Connecticut First Regiment in the early months of the revolution. He began his painting career in 1777.
John Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull, governor of Connecticut from 1769 until 1784. John entered Harvard University at the age of fifteen and served in the military during the Revolutionary War. While a student, Trumbull visited the studio of John Singleton Copley and was inspired to become a painter.
