Note: this is a spoiler-free review of the first episode of Quarry, which premieres tonight on Cinemax at 10pm EST/PST.

There's a lot viewers may find familiar in the first episode of Quarry. The show centers around a Vietnam War veteran named Mac Conway (Prometheus' Logan Marshall-Green) who returns home and finds difficulty in settling back into civilian life. But as the series is based on the series of novels by Max Allan Collins (the first of which debuted way back in 1976), perhaps the show deserves to be cut some slack for its formulaic trappings. Still, it's no coincidence that the premiere stands out the most when it veers away from the familiar post-Vietnam formula.

Following a brief, violent flash-forward sequence, "You Don't Miss Your Water" follows Mac and fellow Vietnam vet Arthur as they return home to Memphis and try to leave the army behind. In some ways, what follows is a perfectly ordinary post-war drama. Both men struggle to reconnect with their wives (played by Bomb Girls' Jodi Balfour and Luther's Nikki Amuka-Bird), find gainful employment and deal with the lingering trauma of the war. But they also face certain unique struggles upon returning home. Both Mac and Arthur are pariahs in the media for their supposed role in the massacre of Vietnamese civilians. And both also attract the eye of the mysterious Broker (Olive Kitteridge's Peter Mullan), who runs a shadowy network of hitmen and sees potential in these two trained killers.

Quarry has a great deal working in its favor, especially when it comes to the gorgeous depiction of '70s-era Memphis. The show also boasts some very memorable and quirky characters. Unfortunately, the straightforward main protagonist isn't one of them. The series needs to work on adding more color to Mac and tightening up its languid pacing before ...
