Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century.

Portrait of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire is a portrait painting by the English painter Thomas Gainsborough of the political hostess Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. It was painted between 1785 and 1787.
Known for his elegant full length portraits of British society figures, often depicted in front of elaborate landscapes, Thomas Gainsborough also developed a category of painting called "fancy pictures" that are romanticized landscape paintings of rustic rural figures.
Gainsborough painted her in the winter of 1784–5, during her third London season. Most of Mrs Siddons’s earlier portraits depict her in character, but Gainsborough portrayed her off-stage and in fashionable contemporary dress.
Life of Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. London, 1856, p. 227, lists a portrait of a lady in a white satin dress and blue mantle edged with fur, 21 by 26 in., in the collection of Sir W. Holburne, Bt.—possibly this picture.
