Touko Valio Laaksonen (8 May 1920 – 7 November 1991), known by the pseudonym Tom of Finland, was a Finnish artist who made stylized highly masculinized homoerotic art, and influenced late 20th-century gay culture.

Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, specialising in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhabitations. His work – made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ – became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.
The “Tom of Finland” look — boots, leather, mustaches, tight jeans — became vibrant in the gay community and eventually crossed over into the mainstream via the artists it inspired. Robert Mapplethorpe became not just a fan but a friend, and photographed the artist. Andy Warhol bought several prints.
