This full miniseries review contains some spoilers (albeit for a story about a real life person).

The "true story" of James Bond creator Ian Fleming has been told for television before, most notably in Goldeneye (yes, there was a Goldeneye before the Brosnan Bond film was made and this one starred Game of Thrones' Charles Dance as Fleming) and The Secret Life of Ian Fleming (starring Sean Connery's son Jason as Fleming). The takeaway from all depictions so far has been that Fleming himself was the mirror image of his famous secret agent creation.

But BBC America's miniseries Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond, debuting this Wednesday, is the first one to truly delve into the author's raunchiness, the dark and sadistic sexual side of him that was as much a part of who the literary James Bond was as Fleming's wartime exploits. Captain America's Dominic Cooper plays Fleming, although he looks nothing at all like the man.

This Ian Fleming is a true prodigal son whose skirt-chasing and profligate ways prove to be a perpetual disappointment to his stern mother Eve (Lesley Manville). She prefers her elder and more admirable, heroic son Peter (Hellboy's Rupert Evans), who was more of a real 007 than Ian ever was. It doesn't take a shrink to figure out where James Bond's misogyny stems from.

After four episodes, you won't come away with much of a liking for its subject, but Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond does offer some fun "origin" winks for 007 fans -- if you can get through all the ridiculous sex scenes without laughing.
