Dec 23, 2011 · Montreal’s Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral ( Cathédrale Marie Reine du Monde) is an European-inspired Basilica that also happens to be the seat of the Archdiocese for Montreal. The Cathedral is meant to be a scaled down version of the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
In 1919, Pope Benedict XV conferred the title of Minor Basilica on Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Cathedral, renamed to Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral in 1955. Nestled among office buildings in Montréal’s downtown core, lies this cathedral, the third largest church in Québec.
The Cathedral of Mary Queen of the World is a smaller but still magnificent version of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The architects scaled it down to a quarter of its size, mindful of the structural risks of Montréal’s severe winters.
Jun 23, 2024 · This low scale replica of St. Peter's cathedral was built to replace the one located on Saint-Denis (Saint-Jacques) destroyed several times by fires. Construction of the basilica lasted for over 24 years between the foundation stone (1870) and its opening after the blessing of Bishop Fabre.
