Balcon, Sir Michael Elias (1896–1977), film producer, was born on 19 May 1896 at 116 Summer Lane, Edgbaston, Birmingham, the youngest son and fourth of five children of Louis Balcon (c.1858–1946) and his wife, Laura Greenberg (c.1863–1934). His parents, Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe, had met in England.

Michael Balcon was a film producer. Through Gainsborough Pictures, Gaumont-British and Ealing Studios, Balcon was responsible for a wide range of classic British films including 'The 39 Steps' in 1935, 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' in 1949, 'The Lavender Hill Mob' in 1951 and 'The Cruel Sea' in 1952.
