Trujillo (Spanish: [tɾuˈxiʝo]; Quechua: Truhillu; Mochica: Cɥimor) [12] is a city in coastal northwestern Peru and the capital of the Department of La Libertad. It is the third most populous city [13] and center of the third most populous metropolitan area of Peru.

Trujillo, city, Peru, lying in the coastal desert, 343 miles (552 km) north-northwest of Lima. The second oldest Spanish city in Peru, Trujillo was founded in 1534 by Diego Almagro; the following year it was elevated to city status by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro , who named it after his birthplace in Spain .
Trujillo is the third largest city in Peru after Lima and Arequipa, with a population of 682,834 (National Census 2007). It also has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in Peru, but you certainly shouldn’t avoid Trujillo because of it.
