Altavista, Virginia was founded, in large part, by several members of the Lane family in 1907. In 1912 a small box company in town experiencing financial difficulty was purchased at auction for $500 by John Edward Lane.

Altavista is an incorporated town in Campbell County, Virginia. The town is in the Lynchburg Metropolitan Area, and its population was 3,378 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1907 by John Edward Lane and Henry L. Lane of the Lane Company, and was chartered on September 1912.
By 1912 the new Town of Altavista was incorporated. That year also saw the formation of the Lane Company, maker of the famous Lane cedar chests. From its very beginning as a box manufacturer, the Lane Company would become one of Altavista’s major employers.
