Named after the 150-acre estate originally owned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 17th century, the school now uses this estate as its campus.
Hahn’s ideals also led to the founding of Round Square, a world-wide association of 190 schools that all share our ethos of teaching social responsibility as well as academic excellence. Such was the impact of Gordonstoun on HRH Prince Philip that he wanted his three sons to attend.

Gordonstoun estate was once owned by Sir Robert Gordon, an aristocrat who was known for his odd habits. Obsessed with alchemy, Sir Robert was well-known in the town for his ties to all things mystical.
Round Square is an international network of schools, based on the educational concepts of Kurt Hahn, and named after a distinctive building at Gordonstoun. Founded by a group of seven schools in the late 1960s, by 1996 it had grown to 20 member schools worldwide, and has since expanded to over 200 schools. [1]
Round Square and Gordonstoun House. It was founded in 1934 as the British Salem School by German-Jewish educator Kurt Hahn based on the model of Schule Schloss Salem, that he had founded in Germany in 1919. Gordonstoun has an enrolment of around 500 full boarders as well as about 100 day pupils between the ages of 5 and 18.

Round Square owes much to the heritage of Kurt Hahn, who founded two of our original member schools, Schule Schloss Salem in Germany, with Prince Max of Baden, and Gordonstoun in Scotland. Both schools committed to equipping youth for leadership and service in a democracy by helping them to prepare for life despite hardships, dangers, and emotion of the moment.
