I would even go as far as saying that Shutter Island is basically Scorsese's version of the Alan Parker cult movie. Wonderfully creepy, well paced, masterfully edited, Mickey Rourke at his best, beautifully shot (the expressionist use of the light, the framing, the use of recurrent visual motifs), with a haunting score.
Coincidentally I re-watched Shutter Island yesterday and did a bit of reading as I did, because I wanted to notice all the little hints of Teddy / Andrew's denial of his reality and that he had been committed to the island prior to his 'arrival' by the ferry.
