The City of Toronto Act is the name of a series of different acts of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario that have governed the organization and political powers of the city since Toronto's original incorporation as a city in 1834.
The City of Toronto Act, 2006 (COTA) came into force on January l, 2007. With COTA, Toronto’s government has broad powers to pass by-laws regarding matters that range from public safety to the city’s economic, social and environmental well-being, subject to certain limitations.

1. Governing principles of the Act: City exists for purpose of providing good government. Council is responsible and accountable. s. 2. Purposes of this Act. create broad framework of powers to allow City to do following things to provide good government including the following:
(1) On January 1, 1998, the inhabitants of the urban area are constituted as a body corporate under the name of “City of Toronto” in English and “cité de Toronto” in French. 1997, c. 2, s. 2 (1).
