Introduction. From his first published article, on mathematical models of symbiosis and parasitism, Anatol Rapoport’s work was always concerned with the interaction between the individual and the environment, especially human society.
Anatol Rapoport Pure and Applied Mathematics. One of the main originators of conflict theory, game theory, and peace research. The Story. Rapoport studied piano, composition and conducting in Vienna, but came to USA in the mid 1930s where he became a mathematician of biology and behavioral science.
Known for formulating the “Tit for Tat” strategy, his approach to game theory reflected a nuanced understanding of knowledge, wisdom, and ethics; the differences, for example, between modeling behavior—what works as an algorithm in a structured game—and solving complex human social interactions.
