On 27 August 2007, he married Aaron Tone in Provincetown, Massachusetts. On May 26, 2023, Sullivan announced on his blog that he and his husband, Aaron Tone, divorced the previous week. Sullivan was barred for many years from applying for United States citizenship because of his HIV-positive status.
