But it had taken years of effort for Leicester to discover its civic pride to get this ambitious project off the ground, reports award-winning features writer and journalism lecturer Jeremy Clay.
Leicester School of Art. The School of Art has been through an abundance of names changes. Founded in 1870, it merged with the Leicester Technical School in 1897 to form the Leicester Municipal Technical and Art School.
The City of Leicester began to plan the first post-war two-year training college in the country, the City of Leicester Training College for Teachers. The course started in September 1945 with an intake of 54, but as no College building had yet been prepared students were asked to observe lessons in their local schools and remain at home.
City of Leicester College is in the east of Leicester on Downing Drive, off Spencefield Lane (B667). The college provides education for ages between 11-19 for different levels from GCSEs to BTECs as well as a sixth-form college. It offers a wide variety of courses but specialises in Business.
