Nov 28, 2023 · This thread is about Cliff Phillips, who fell soloing in 1970, and crawled back to his car. When this was reported an unknown wit made the quip about soloing his own rescues. I have no idea what Doug Scott or Craig Pant Ifan have to do with anything.
Cliff, a stalwart of the Llanberis scene since the 60s, was a man preceded by his reputation for deep, almost cosmic eccentricity and long-lived dirtbaggery. He was also known for some incredible tales of survival, particularly when he took a reputed 200ft ground fall soloing on the Mot, managing to crawl to the road before passing out.

The film records the actual ascent of the Eiger North Face in 1970 by Eric Jones, Cliff Phillips, Peter Minks and Leo Dickinson, who carried two 16mm cine cameras and 5000ft of film to document the ascent. On an early attempt Cliff Phillips slipped on a steep icy slope and fell 200 feet.
