Usually the results are accurate to +/- 1.5 octane numbers. As a much cheaper but not 100% foolproof way to do so, you can run your car until it's practically out of gas. Then fill it up with a reference fuel like a 93 (93% iso-octane, 7% n-heptane) and estimate the knock while that burns.
