Aug 27, 2009 · Sir Jacob Epstein, who died 50 years ago this month, is recognised as one of the great sculptors of the 20th century, a true revolutionary who helped change modern art forever.
It was made by copying the torso from the bronze ‘The Rock Drill’ in Tate's collection, modelling it in clay to be later cast in plaster. The missing parts of the original sculpture were recreated in plaster using Epstein's drawings along with the only surviving photograph of the original 'Rock Drill' as a reference.
