Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (/ ˈ l ʌ t j ə n z / LUT-yənz; 29 March 1869 – 1 January 1944) was an English architect known for imaginatively adapting traditional architectural styles to the requirements of his era.
As the First World War engulfed the world, Lutyens played a vital role in commemorating the fallen soldiers. He was appointed one of the principal architects for the Imperial War Graves Commission (now Commonwealth War Graves Commission) and contributed to the design of numerous war memorials.
