The University of Rhode Island (URI) is the main public research university in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. It was established in 1892 as Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The name was changed to Rhode Island State College around 1909, and officially to University of Rhode Island during 1951.
URI’s Inner Space Center is the only one of its kind in the nation. Founded by oceanographer Robert Ballard, Ph.D. ’75, Hon. ’86, who discovered the Titanic wreckage, the center provides scientists worldwide with real-time video and data on oceanographic expeditions.
