    • CAPITAL SPENDING. Total capex spending in the energy patch declined 30% last year, to just $17.4 billion. Oil sands producers accounted for $7.2 billion in spending last year, down from $9.9 billion in 2019, and the lowest since 2004.
    • PRODUCTION. ALBERTA SUPPLY OF CRUDE OIL AND EQUIVALENT (COURTESY THE AER) Alberta's oil sands producers averaged 3.0 million bbl/day of bitumen last year, split almost exactly 50/50 between mining and in-situ operators.
    • OIL SANDS RESERVES. Almost 1.1 billion barrels of bitumen were produced last year, reducing remaining established reserves to 161.3 billion. That works out to 160 years of reserves, assuming no change in production, prices or technology.
    • BITUMEN UPGRADING. Roughly 47% of all bitumen production was upgraded to synthetic crude last year, leaving the remaining volumes to be diluted and sold directly to refineries.
