6 days ago · NOAA provides forecasts for seasonal blooms of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in Lake Erie, typically from July to October when warmer water creates favorable bloom conditions. Western Lake Erie has been plagued by an increase of HABs intensity over the past decade.

NCCOS issues forecasts for Lake Erie after sampling confirms presence of the HAB species Microcystis, during bloom season (typically July to October) when conditions are optimal for growth. The Lake Erie HAB Forecast is updated daily and provides information on current extent and trajectory of HABs as they form.
At the end of June, NOAA issues a final seasonal forecast, which combines a more rigorous set of models to estimate the severity of the bloom for the summer. The Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast system is updated nearly daily throughout the bloom season (July - October).

Summary: The Western Lake Erie HAB Early Season Projection provides an estimate of potential Microcystis harmful algal bloom (HAB) severity. The projected severity depends on input of total bioavailable phosphorus (TBP) from the Maumee River during the loading season
Summary: NOAA NCCOS and partners forecast a smaller than average cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (HAB) in western Lake Erie this summer, with a severity of ~3 and a potential range between 2-4.5. We expect the bloom to be less severe than last year (severity of 6.8).
