Owned by Stingray Group, VOCM first went on the air on October 19, 1936. Through the "VOCM/Big Land FM Radio Network" of stations owned by Stingray, VOCM programming is carried throughout the province.
Ownership of Colonial Broadcasting System Limited: Mrs. E. M. Butler 59.5%, W. B. Williams, Jr. 26.5%, W. B. Williams, Sr. 13.0%, J. V. Butler 0.5% and H. N. Butler 0.5%. Walter B. Williams was president of the company and chief engineer for the VOCM stations.

Stingray Group Inc. 1981. Colonial Broadcasting System Ltd., owner of 590 VOCM, was granted a licence for a new FM station at St. John’s. It would offer a Middle of the Road format on a frequency of 97.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 20,000 watts. VOCM would provide a recording studio and allocate money to develop Canadian talent.
