Tambor was born on July 8, 1944, in San Francisco, California, the son of Eileen (née Salzberg), a homemaker, and Bernard Tambor, a flooring contractor. [1] He grew up in a Conservative Jewish family with roots in Hungary and Ukraine.
His paternal grandparents, Ignatz and Mollie, were Hungarian Jewish immigrants. His maternal grandparents, Joseph and Gertrude, were Ukrainian Jews (from Kiev).
