Virginia Tech is a great school, and has a good rep for STEM especially in the Mid-Atlantic region! I wouldn't always put too much stock into acceptance rates, especially since so many private universities have introduced different methods to lower them in an attempt to look more prestigious.
The essays are very tell not show, contrastingly to most college essays. Answer all of the follow-up questions in each question and try to highlight a variety of parts of your application rather than repeating topics. The topics can relate, but showing different facets of yourself is always good, so make them distinguishable. Good luck!
