The history of Norfolk, Virginia as a modern settlement begins in 1636. The city was named after the English county of Norfolk and was formally incorporated in 1736.
Norfolk County was a county of the South Hampton Roads in eastern Virginia, created in 1691. After the Civil War, portions of Norfolk County were lost and the territory became parts of the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth and South Norfolk.
