In 1955, the extant mid-century brick building opened on the site, named O. W. Dillon Memorial High School in honor of the professor. 14 years later in 1969 with integration, O. W. Dillon High School became Kentwood Elementary School.
The History of O.W. Dillon Leadership Academy. Prior to 1910 there is no record of a name for the school for African-Americans in Kentwood. However, the head of the first school was Esaw Lawson. During this same year money was donated to construct Kentwood Industrial for African-Americans.

The colored training schools were the real beginning of secondary public education for blacks in the rural south. After seeing his dream of a lifetime shattered, Mr. O. W. Dillon, principal of the Tangipahoa Parish Training School, retired on May 17, 1952, at 69 years old.
