The church is in Wheeling Township, just outside the City of Nerstrand, and is just one mile from the entrance to Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. The property for sale sat right between the church and the park. Nerstrand is a small city of about 250 just 10 miles from Northfield.
The most significant remnant of the “Big Woods” that remains is in Nerstrand State Park in Wheeling Township. The first European explorer to visit the area was Le Sueur who came in 1695. Le Sueur built a fort on Prairie Island on the Mississippi, traded with the Mdewakanton Dakota, and explored the area as far as Mankato.
