In 1951, the College’s name was changed to the New York School of Interior Design, recognizing that the education we provide doesn’t only concern itself with the details and finishes of a space but the architecture of the interior, everything that is not strictly structural.
It was founded in 1960 as Christopher Newport College, an extension school of the College of William and Mary for mid-career working professionals, members of the military, and non-traditional students in and around the Newport News area of the Hampton Roads region.

History. The New York School of Interior Design was founded by Mr. Sherrill Whiton, in 1916, with its location being metropolitan Manhattan, New York. It was chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York in 1924, and given degree granting authority in 1976.
Sep 18, 2011 · A decade after it opened in 1961, CNU became a four-year college. In 1977, it gained independence from W&M, and in 1992, Christopher Newport College officially became a university.
