Hugo Wilhelm Friedhofer (May 3, 1901 – May 17, 1981) [1] was an American composer and cellist best known for his motion picture scores.
Hugo Friedhofer (1901-1981) was a prolific and versatile film composer who orchestrated and arranged scores for many Hollywood classics. He won an Oscar for The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and was nominated eight times, but also faced self-doubt and anxiety.

His father, Paul, was a cellist trained in Dresden, Germany; his mother, Eva König, was born in Germany.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS. 1919-22 Plays cello in chamber recitals throughout San Francisco, e.g. Sorosis Club Hall. c1921-28 Cellist in various theatre orchestras: Royal on Polk Street, Haight Street, Castro, and Granada theatres. Also stage band arranger under Andrea Setaro, Maurice Lawrence, and George Lipshultz.
